Canadian makeup brand NUDESTIX expands into skincare with their new NUDESTIX SKIN range, I got all the details!
A quick note – BLM isn’t a trend and I’m very much for holding brands accountable, since then NUDESTIX have included more and more skin tones in their socials, and their SKIN account has people of all of all ages and skin tones. This should never be an after thought, but part of holding brands accountable is allowing them to change. There is a brand that I’m not accepting any changes from, but won’t name names.
Let’s dive in to NUDESTIX SKIN! What’s in the vegan, cruelty-free, fragrance-free brand? A balm cleanser, a gel cleanser, a vitamin-C moisturiser, glycolic acid toner and micro-peeling cream. They are super cute of course, because you’d expect a brand to be aesthetically pleasing (and inclusive) in 2020.
It took them a couple of years to formulate the line, which has as its main purpose to help your skin be the best version of itself. The brand is founded by Jenny Frankel who has a background as a chemical engineer, her daughter Taylor Frankel and the skincare line was created with the help of cosmetic dermatologist Jason Emer.
It’s been designed as a complete 4-step regimen (add a separate SPF always), cleanse – exfoliate – moisturise, a multi-tasking routine from a doctor’s perspective.
NUDESTIX SKIN CITRUS CLEAN BALM & MAKEUP MELT, 60ml, $34 (£26)
The 4-in-1 Make-Up Melt will remove makeup very easily. It’s a thick balm and the fact it comes in a tube is very handy as it’s easier to use and more hygienic. The first time I struggled a bit getting it out of tube but then it’s no issue. It’s a thick yellow-ish texture and a little goes a long way. A nut-size blob is enough for your face. Emulsify it a little and spread it across your face. The scent is beautiful, like fresh lemons in the summer!
The brand says you can use this as your own-step cleanse and there’s no need for a second one unless you want to. Personally, I always go in with a second cleanse but you do you!
Ingredients: Antibacterial olive oil, brightening rosehip oil, litsea cubeba fruit oil is a citrus essential oil that balances sebum, orange peel oil is anti-inflammatory, rosemary leaf oil is anti-bacterial, eucalyptus leaf oil is clarifying, chia seed oil is hydrating and apple fruit extract is an AHA (malic acid) that gentle exfoliates and brightens the skin
Top tip: Can be used as a quick 5-minute mask
NUDESTIX SKIN GENTLE HYDRA-GEL FACE CLEANSER, 70ml, $18 (£14)
The 3-in-1 hydra-gel face cleanser has been inspired by micellar water cleanser (Taylor gets eczema and wanted something soothing) and it’s incredibly lightweight. It’s a gel but a very light one. It’s hard to describe the texture but it’s a unique one for sure. It’s left my skin soft and nourished and most importantly, clean!
This is a great cleanser to use after you’ve had a treatment as it’s gentle, hydrating and soothing.
Ingredients: Hyaluronic acid is the main ingredient for this super hydrating cleanser, mushroom extract that brightens, cicer seed (chickpea) extract for improved tone and skin texture and bergamot fruit oil that’s anti-inflammatory and anti-septic.
Top tip: Can be used as a mask on irritated skin, keep it in the fridge for extra soothing action
LEMON-AID DETOX & GLOW MICRO-PEEL, 60ml, $34 (£26)
A 3-in-1 chemical exfoliant to clear away dead skin cells, clear pores and give glow to the skin. This is an enzymatic chemical peel with a mix of AHAs and vitamin C, to instantly brighten.
Most products need a while to work (apart from cleansers), but this specific one works almost instantly and continues to work the more you use it. Personally I would recommend using this once a week, though the brand says 2-3 times is okay too. It completely depends on how many acids you use and other active ingredients. I don’t like using acids daily as I use a retinoid at night and flannels to wash my face and that’s enough exfoliation/cell turnover for me personally.
Enzymes are great and gentle at eating away dead skin cells and I really like them in a mask. This is a unique treatment as it’s very quick but effective.
You take a pea-sized blob, apply all over your face on dry skin and massage it in for 60-90 seconds until it rubs off in little bits. It’s hard to describe, but if you try it you’ll know what I mean! Remove the little bits with a (reusable) cotton round or cloth. Don’t cleanse afterward, you want the acids to continue working after you’ve applied the peel.
Ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, apple and pomegranate fruit extracts that reduce redness and are antioxidants, papaya extract (papain) is the enzyme that breaks down protein, lemon peel oil to brighten, ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate is an oil-soluble vitamin C that brightens and is an antioxidant, niacinamide minimises the appearance of pores and improves skin tone.
Top tip: Use in any places that you might want to target persistent dead skin, example – feet and lips
5% CITRUS FRUIT & GLYCOLIC GLOW TONER, 95ml, $28 (£22)
A 3% glycolic and 2% citrus fruit glow toner that delivers instant glow to the skin and will renew your cells. It’s a water-based toner so if you prefer alcohol-free toners, this is one you should look out for.
You can use it once or even twice a day if you’re a seasoned acid user. Personally as I previously mentioned, I wouldn’t use this more than once or twice a week. The pump is super handy and you can apply it on a cotton round or directly on fingers and then your face. The skin doesn’t feel tight or irritated after using this, which is great. Sometimes a tingle is nice when using acids, but not always!
Ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, lime to exfoliate, lemon to brighten (also an antioxidant), grape, apple (aka malic acid) to balance oil and exfoliate, orange to brighten the skin.
Top tip: Interchange the acid and the toner depending on your needs.
CITRUS-C MASK & DAILY MOISTURIZER, 60ml, $38 (£29)
A multi-use hydrating moisturiser, that’s also perfect as a makeup primer. This is really lightweight and a good option if you don’t like heavy moisturisers. It contains some oils to lock in moisture and turmeric to brighten.
A little goes a long way so a pea-size blob is all you need for your face and it leaves a velvet finish. It’s not greasy but it feels plump and it leaves a nice glow on the skin (not too much). There are no fillers or waxes so it won’t feel like it’s blocking your pores. It’s suitable to use around the eye area, so feel free to apply an extra layer on your orbital bone.
Ingredients: yuzu that helps with inflammation and high in vitamin C, turmeric is anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial and reduces redness/irritation
Top tip: Apply a thicker layer at night and let it act as an overnight mask
Packaging
All the clear boxes that the products come in, are 100% biodegradable. The ink is made from soy and the tubes are aluminium, which is recyclable. To recycle them, cut the tubes open, remove any excess product and recycle at home.
The company offer to recycle tubes for you if that’s not an option available where you live and it’s available in the US and Canada. They send you a bag and a shipping label and you post it back to them.
NUDESTIX SKIN: Overall impressions
This is a great first product range by NUDESKIN, I’m hoping they will expand to include an SPF for a complete routine. Just a note on the use of Essential Oils, these are fine for most people but if you have experienced any irritation with essential oils in the past, then I’m sorry to say this probably won’t suit you.
Though the range is fragrance-free, the scents come from the essential oils and can be an irritant for some people. Always patch test and test before using a new product and discontinue immediately if any irritation occurs.
The two products I really like so far are the gel cleanser and the micro-peel as, in my opinion, are the more unique ones. After a few weeks since my initial thoughts, I have to say the range is quite heavy on the citrus oils and I still like the gel cleanser the most, since it doesn’t contain citrus. I think the moisturiser is the one I won’t be using as I find it a tiny bit irritating. I would rather use it as a mask!
Products can be bought on their website and ship to USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, Mexico, Singapore, South Korea and United Kingdom.
