Utopian, free-spirited and struggling were the lives of artists like Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe; and that’s were Marta Marques and Paulo Almeida found inspiration for the Marques’Almeida AW14/15 collection.
Through the book ‘Just Kids’, (it has been on my to-read list for a long time) and the Hotel Chelsea which has been home to many suffering, artistic souls like Janis Joplin.
A feeling of romance and freedom is evident throughout the show, that featured lots of denim; in dark wash and sparkly colour as seen in capes, skinny jeans, super wide leg jeans, skirts, tops and dresses, as well as pops of red ensembles and coloured furry scarves.
Silk slip dresses paired with furry slippers and jersey tops and bottoms with cut-out details, crushed velvet and satin ensembles make the collection even more interesting.
A great addition are also the velvet kitten heels that make the collection even more dreamy (and comfortable).
“Eyeing the traffic circulating the lobby hung with bad art. Big invasive stuff unloaded on Stanley Bard in exchange for rent. The hotel is an energetic, desperate haven for scores of gifted hustling children from every rung of the ladder. Guitar bums and stoned-out beauties in Victorian dresses. Junkie poets, playwrights, broke-down filmmaker, and French actors. Everybody passing through here is somebody if nobody in the outside world.”
-Patti Smith, ‘Just Kids’
